We use the CUBES Method when solving word problems.
After reading through the word problem to get a general understanding of the situation taking place, we put CUBES to work. This is how we do it:
C - Circle all important numbers that will help us solve the problem. We also circle units of measure when appropriate.
U - Underline the question we are being asked to answer. If there are more than one, double-line the second question.
B - Box any words that give us clues for which operation(s) to use. For example, "in all" "how many more", etc.
E - Examine the question and evaluate what steps to take. Eliminate unnecessary information.
S - Solve it step by step, and check. Does the answer make sense? How can I check?
We also "put up walls", meaning we divide the word problem into parts so that we are not taking in all the information at once. We call this taking little bites instead of swallowing it whole. :)
