January News
January is a month to think about:
'How am I doing? What are my strengths? What should I build on?"
As we begin a new month and a new year at St. Rita, I would like to reflect on some of our strengths:
Our classes are working hard on our Four R’s:
Reading
- Students use context clues to help them figure out new words, new word meanings, etc.
- Students read literature and informational text to build background knowledge and vocabulary
Writing
- Students are strengthening their writing skills by using mechanics, sentence structure, and vocabulary when explaining the main idea and supporting details in their writing responses
Arithmetic
- Students work very hard learning basic math facts: addition, subtraction in all grades as well as multiplication and subtraction in the upper grades. Students learn very quickly that when they know their math facts, it is much easier to concentrate on using the facts to solve word problems, when working with fractions, and in computation.
- Speaking of word problems, students are asked to 'put themselves' in the real-world situation' before even attempting to solve the problem. This strategy helps students understand what the problem is and how to solve it.
- Students also look for 'reasonableness' in ansers. 'Does the answer make sense?"
Religion
- How lucky we are at St. Rita School to bring Jesus into our daily lives whether it be during instruction or recess.
- When I ask students in September what they would like to learn this year, many answer, "Mary and the Saints."
- Parents plant the seeds of faith, we at St. Rita water those seeds.
- Each class hosts a monthly liturgy
