English Language Arts (ELA)
We will practice important reading and writing skills throughout the year. We will read and discuss various texts from Ready New York Common Core Learning Standards. These texts include Science/Social Studies passages, folktales, tall tales, articles, stories, plays, and poems. Additionally, texts recommended by EngageNY will be used when we complete selected modules. We will be responding to multiple choice questions, short response questions, and extended writing prompts by using "text evidence."
Our English Language Arts time is comprised of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We will strive to improve our understanding of capitalization usage, punctuation rules, grammar usage, and spelling of high frequency words as well as content specific words. We will complete spelling activities each week to help us learn new words, spelling rules, and spelling strategies.
During ELA we have the opportunity to:
Become better readers and writers by considering and applying skills that "good" readers and writers do
Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R) daily
Improve our cursive writing skills everyday (size, shape, slant, and spacing of letters and words)
Work on the writing process (pre-write/brainstorm, write a draft, revise, edit, and "publish" a final copy)
